Addiction is like a parasite. At first, you may not realize that the parasite is eating away at you. Suddenly, this thing has eaten away all that is good in your life. Your addiction to drugs or alcohol has caused you to lose family, friends, possessions, and your grip on life and reality. It is way too easy to become entangled in a web that you cannot see a way out of on your own. Many people fall prey to addiction without ever even knowing until it is too late.
There are several different types of addiction. The most common of which is some form of chemical dependency. Chemical dependency is what happens when your body becomes accustomed to taking a chemical into its system on a regular basis. Eventually, the body begins to believe that it cannot function properly without this new element that you have added. Prescription medications, alcohol, heroine, marijuana, crack, cocaine, nicotine, crystal meth, and hallucinogens, all fall under this category. In many cases an addict does not even realize that the chemical that they are putting into their body will lead to a chemical dependency. They start for whatever reason, whether it be a prescribed medication or something taken for recreation, and end up needing the drug just to get by.
The second type of addiction is emotional dependency. While the two types go hand in hand, an emotional dependency can occur without the presence of a chemical one. The most well known forms of this are addictions to sex, internet porn addiction, food, and gambling. In these cases the mind is trained to believe that it has to have these things in order to get by. It becomes the soul focus of one’s thinking. An emotional addiction can be present with the use of chemicals because of the fact that there is an emotional attachment that an addict forms to the drug that they are taking.
If you feel that you are suffering with either one of these types of addictions, in any form, it is imperative that you seek professional help. Addiction will take a strong hold on your life and you will be lucky to get through alive and well.
